Why watch?

Yonas Kibreab as Elio is so earnestly likeable that you can't help rooting for him from the start. The whole premise is set in this completely foreign alien world with its own logic, so every location and new character feels genuinely fresh. It's a simple find-the-alien-kid-and-get-him-home story, but the way it actually unfolds has real surprises. Fast 98 minutes, clean animation, and genuinely holds your attention the whole way through.

Who is it for?

This is a light animated film perfect for a lazy afternoon with kids — funny, fast-paced, zero stress. If they liked the first Super Mario Bros. Movie or The Lego Movie, it's got that same vibe. Safe for young kids, no violence or harsh language.

Elio is a daydreaming underdog kid who accidentally gets mistaken for Earth's ambassador to an intergalactic organization called the Commune, where representatives from distant galaxies hang out. He's completely unprepared, has no idea what he's doing, and gets thrown into a wild series of trials while trying to bond with bizarre alien creatures who definitely don't take him seriously at first. Directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi packed this with the kind of colorful, inventive character design and humor that feels like a mashup of Lilo & Stitch's heart with Guardians of the Galaxy's cosmic weirdness. If you liked how Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse or The LEGO Movie balance genuine emotional stakes with constant visual gags, this scratches that same itch.
