Why watch?

Rishab Shetty as a shamanic warrior in a trance state fighting spirits is the image you'll carry out — worth watching for that alone. Two hours forty-five minutes never drags because the story keeps switching between the real world and the supernatural one. Rukmini Vasanth plays someone caught between rational and spiritual worlds, and their dynamic drives everything. It's not straightforward action — it's darker, fantasy-soaked, where old knowledge about nature matters as much as physical fighting.

Who is it for?

Watch this if you're into epic action-dramas with fantasy elements and don't mind sitting with something long and intense — nearly three hours. If you liked Baahubali or RRR, same kind of scale and emotional punch. There's significant violence in the action sequences, but that's par for the course with this style of filmmaking.

If Kantara: Chapter 1 grabbed you because it weaves local mythology into physical trials and magic woven into the landscape, try Tumbbad — it builds dread around family legend and a cursed treasure buried in Indian forest, where folklore becomes genuinely threatening. Artham Palace operates in that same zone where old stories turn dangerous. If what hooked you was the protagonist's solitary, visceral battle with evil through inner transformation, 7 Khoon Maaf has that same obsessive, brutal wrestling match with your own demons.

Classic overview

During the Kadamba reign, King Vijayendra, the ruler of the fictional feudatory land of Bangra, meets his final fate while venturing into the mystical forest of Kantara. Witnessing this, his son Rajashekara seals the borders of their realm. Later, Prince Kulashekara reopens them through a brutal massacre. The protagonist, Berme, in search of prosperity, crosses the divide and ignites a conflict of faith, power, and destiny between the Kingdom and Nature.

Kantara: Chapter 1 drops you into a world where ancient folklore and brutal action collide, following a man caught between divine power and human vengeance. Rishab Shetty directs and stars as someone bound to a mythological force that transforms him into something more than human, all while the people around him want him dead. The film breathes like a fever dream — Karnataka's forests and temples become characters themselves, drenched in ritualistic detail that feels lived-in rather than fabricated. If you felt the raw intensity of RRR or the mythic weight of Padmaavat, this is in that same arena.
