Why watch?

Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans play a couple breaking up, and the whole film tells the breakup from three different perspectives — you see her version, then his, then a completely different story. It's not standard because each perspective changes what you thought about the previous scene. Director Celine Song creates an intimate portrait of a relationship where neither of them is the villain — something just broke, and the film doesn't try to fix it for you. Hours of conversation instead of dramatic scenes, but that conversation grips you.

Who is it for?

Perfect for an evening when you want romance but also something that makes you think — the story doesn't go where you'd expect. If you liked Challenger or Past Lives, this is for you. There are intimate scenes and conversations about infidelity, so not for younger viewers.

If you liked how Celine Song builds tension between desire and reality in relationships, check out A Past and Thanksgiving — both feature actors carrying complicated feelings on their faces while dialogue does the heavy lifting. All three treat romance not as a destination but as a place where characters' entire life choices collide.

Lucy is a matchmaker in New York who's built her career on pairing people up, but she's ruthless about what she wants in a man — and she thinks she finally finds him. Then her ex shows up and suddenly everything she thought she knew about what makes a perfect match gets complicated. Director Celine Song made something that feels less like a typical rom-com and more like a relationship thriller, where Dakota Johnson's Lucy has to actually sit with the mess of her own desires instead of solving everyone else's. If you liked Marriage Story or Before trilogy, this explores that same territory of how attraction and compatibility aren't always the same thing.
