Why watch?

Kazunari Ninomiya is stuck in a subway station, walking through the same corridors and staircases over and over, but something shifts each loop — details change, something feels wrong. The atmosphere gets increasingly unsettling because you never know if reality is glitching or if he's losing it, and the film never explains it outright. Director Genki Kawamura builds tension with almost no special effects, just this single location repeating with variations, and that repetition with changes actually works. Tight 95 minutes that doesn't spell everything out by the end.

Who is it for?

Best watched solo in the evening when you want something weird and unsettling—it's a horror that messes with your head rather than relying on cheap scares. If you liked Shutter or experimental mysteries like Under the Skin, this has that same vibe. There's some violence and one sexual moment, but it's not for kids—it's for teens and adults who go for darker atmospheres.

If Exit 8 got you with how a mundane situation — walking through a subway — keeps warping into something increasingly unsettling and surreal, check out Shutter or Noroi: The Curse. Both take a simple premise and let it spiral into obsession. They build dread the same way — not through jump scares, but by making you feel that something is subtly, persistently wrong. Retribution does that too.

You're trapped in an endless subway corridor with one job: find Exit 8. Kazunari Ninomiya plays a man who has to spot what doesn't belong — a flickering light, a passenger who's standing wrong, a sign that's off — and if he misses anything, he's back at the start. Director Genki Kawamura builds this claustrophobic nightmare where every tile, every shadow, every commuter becomes suspicious, and you're sweating more than the guy on screen trying to get out. The horror isn't jump scares; it's the creeping feeling that something's always watching, always wrong, and you might never leave. If The Platform or Squid Game got under your skin, this subway will too.
