Why watch?

Margot Robbie as Barbie lives in Barbie Land where everything is hot pink and plastic, then she and Ken end up in the real world — Ryan Gosling as Ken discovers manhood there and comes back to Barbie Land as an absurdly smug guy, which he plays perfectly. Greta Gerwig makes this into a musical fever dream mixed with comedy and pop art, where every frame looks like a Mattel catalogue came to life. It's a film that takes its own silliness seriously, and the cast plays it like a stage production, not a toy commercial — Issa Rae and America Ferrera get surprisingly smart moments that sneak up on you.

Who is it for?

Saturday afternoon with friends or family — this is a comedy that doesn't require serious attention, and everyone in the theater was laughing. If you liked The Lego Movie or Crazy, Stupid, Love, you'll get the vibe. Safe for kids, no violence, but some jokes are definitely for adults.

If you liked how Barbie deconstructs its own mythology while keeping everything bright and funny, check out Penelope or The Wizard of Lies — both take familiar stories and flip them with real wit. Lego Movie has that same collision between fantasy and reality, where characters realize their world is just another layer of artifice.

Margot Robbie is the perfect Barbie in the perfect Barbieland — a bubble-gum paradise where every doll has a dream job, a convertible, and zero real problems. Then she starts having nightmares and existential thoughts, and the whole pastel world starts to crack. Ryan Gosling shows up as Ken, and Greta Gerwig turns what could've been a toy commercial into something funny, weird, and genuinely clever about growing up. If you liked Jojo Rabbit or The Lego Movie, this has that same energy of taking something plastic and artificial and making it unexpectedly honest.
