Why watch?

Dev Patel directs and stars — the guy gets beaten to hell throughout and every punch actually lands hard. It's not generic action because Patel choreographs the fight sequences so the protagonist uses his whole environment, buildings, people around him — there's a real spatial logic to how he moves through chaos. You feel every single hit. If you've watched John Wick or The Raid, this has that same grounded, destructive style with minimal CG.

Who is it for?

Watch this solo on a weeknight when you want raw fight choreography without overthinking the story — the film doesn't pretend to be anything deeper. If you liked John Wick or The Equalizer, this is right in that lane — Dev Patel systematically fights his way through Delhi. It's brutal with plenty of violence and blood, so not a family watch.

If you connected with Monkey Man because it's a raw, personal action film with Dev Patel as a beat-down guy seeking payback—stripped of bigger stakes and franchise baggage—check out Rogue or Killers. They share that same vibe where the protagonist operates alone, outside the system, settling personal scores through violence rather than saving anyone. The Raid Redemption isn't lesser-known, but Dredd (2012) hits similar notes: trapped in a vertical space, forced to fight their way through with minimal backup and a clear, brutal objective.

Classic overview

Kid is an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

Dev Patel plays a man with nothing left to lose, freshly out of prison and burning to settle accounts with the people who destroyed his life years ago. He's up against a corrupt system run by powerful corporate interests that chewed him up and spit him out, and he's willing to tear through anyone in his way to get payback. Patel directs and stars, bringing a raw, visceral energy to every scene—this isn't slick action movie heroism, it's desperate and painful. If you liked the gritty vigilante rage of John Wick or the systemic corruption anger of Nightcrawler, this scratches that same itch.
